The city of Venice is the site of the EXTRACT project’s Personalized Evacuation Route (PER) use case focuses on testing the project’s cutting-edge extreme data mining technology across the compute continuum. Venice was chosen due to the unique challenges it presents, particularly in crisis management and emergency evacuations. The use case underscores the potential of EXTRACT technology to transform vast amounts of diverse data into actionable knowledge that can address key societal challenges.
Using its data-driven platform, the EXTRACT project is working to revolutionize emergency management by providing real-time, personalized evacuation guidance. The EXTRACT workflow integrates multiple technological components, including:
- an Urban Digital Twin (UDT) that acts as the foundational layer, synthesising data from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, satellite feeds, and 5G signals into a cohesive digital model of Venice
- a Reinforcement Learning system that is trained to offer optimal directions to individuals, prioritizing their well-being by maximizing its reward functions
- a Simulator that offers a safe and controlled platform for testing learning strategies in different situations, also those not reproducible in real life (e.g., after an explosion or a fire)
By combining data on individual’s exact location, current environmental conditions and other real-time inputs, like pedestrian density, the project contributes to enhancing public safety through more efficient evacuations. Learn more about the technology behind the PER here.
Venice’s involvement in this project demonstrates the real-world value of EXTRACT’s technological advancements for public administrations and local citizens. To raise awareness of these challenges and the EU-funded EXTRACT project’s commitment to addressing these challenges, the Venice consortium partner has produced a video showcasing the unique case of Venice and the project’s objectives.
