Date: November 08, 2024

Eduardo Quiñones, principal investigator of the project, along with Enrico Gavagnin, Venice Councillor and Marc Montlleó, Director of Environmental Projects at Barcelona Regional, presented Big Data and AI for enhanced urban decision-making at the Smart City Expo World Congress, a presentation that showcased the potential of EXTRACT and ASCENDER projects.

Once again, the city of Barcelona hosted the Smart City Expo World Congress, the biggest and most influential congress on urban innovation, which took place on 5, 6 and 7 November. On November 5, EXTRACT Project had the opportunity to present its work to an audience of more than 130 people.

Eduardo Quiñones, together with Enrico Gavagnin, presented the PER Use Case, emphasizing the challenges faced by the city of Venice and how EXTRACT’s technology uses extreme data to enhance crisis response. Together with Marc Montlleo’s contributions on the city of Barcelona, they explained how Big Data and Artificial Intelligence can help public administrations to make data-based decisions to address urgent urban needs, including mobility and crisis management.

Dr. Gavagnin also highlighted the various data sources available in the city of Venice, highlighting the Venice Smart Control room, which received information on flood information, phone triangulation and more. He explained how EXTRACT’s technology integrates this data into a mobile app that alerts people of danger and advises on safe routes in case of a crisis.

Eduardo Quiñones emphasized the importance of transforming the large volume of data we have into knowledge to help make informed and data-driven decisions that address urban challenges.

The presentation, structured as a panel, allowed the three experts to illustrate and explain how Big Data and AI are key to the future of smart cities and how these technologies can support critical decision-making.

The session ended with some questions from the audience, which demonstrated their great interest in the topic as well as the current importance of relying on technology to enhance people’s quality of life.
