EXTRACT @SCEWC ’24: Big Data & AI for urban decision-making

The EXTRACT project will play an active role in the 2024 Smart City Expo World Congress, the biggest and most influential event for cities and urban innovation. Every year, leaders from global companies, governments and organizations participate to move cities towards a better future. The event provides a forum for collectivizing urban innovation across the globe and empowering cities to tackle the critical challenges facing them today.

This year the EXTRACT project with co-host a breakout session together with the ASCENDER project. These projects, coordinated by Dr Eduardo Quiñones, senior researcher from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, will show how urban digital twins, predictive analytics, and AI technologies being devloped within the framework of these projects are offering next-generation solutions that help city leaders make data-driven decisions.

Public administration professionals Dr Enrico Gavagnin, city councillor from partner the Metropolitan City of Venice, and Cristina Jimenez, director of Mobility at Barcelona Regional, will explain how harnessing AI and Big Data technologies can help public administrators make better data-driven decisions to respond to urgent urban needs, including mobility and crisis management. 

Dr Gavagnin will explain the unique challenges faced by Venice with regards to responding to crisis management. He will present the disparate data sources available to the city of Venice (Smart Control room, flood info, phone triangulation) and the EXTRACT EU-funded project initiatives to mine and integrate these data sources into a mobile app that will alert people of danger and advise them where to go in the case of a crisis.
