The EXTRACT project joined fellow DATANEXUS cluster siblings at the 2025 “Future-Ready: On-Demand Solutions with AI, Data, and Robotics” event hosted by the AI4Europe and Adra-e coordination and support actions from 18-19 February in Brussels. This two day event sought to bring together active EU-funded projects to share experiences, highlights and challenges with each other and with the European Commission.
On Feburary 18th, five projects from the DATANEXUS cluster presented insights into their work as they begin the third and final year of their projects. EXTRACT partner, Xavier Palomo Teruel from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), represented the project alongside representatives Bahare Salehi (EMERALDS), Radu Prodam (Graph-Massivizer), Pedro García López (NEARDATA), Eugenio Marinelli (SYCLOPS), with EXTRACT partner Janine Gehrig from the BSC moderating the session.

Xavier highlighted key project achievements, including the project’s 1) unified SW platform for compute continuum (CC) orchestration, 2) adaptation of a task-based parallel programming model to describe workflows in the CC, and 3) large-scale data ingestion with infrastructure abstraction. He also shared ongoing challenges, such as 1) the abstraction of the infrastructure, 2) tooling interoperability in all the CC , and 3)ensuring consistent scheduling and performance across multiple clusters.

EMERALDS, Graph-Massivizer, NEARDATA and SYCLOPS presented their respective challenges and the session ended with a discussion on the highlights and challenges the share.
NearData Coordinator, Pedro García López, shared the DATANEXUS cluster’s takeaways from the session in the afternoon town hall session with Cecile Huet, Head of Unit of “Excellence in AI & Robotics” and AI4Europe Coordinator, Barry O’Sullivan.

There is no AI without (extreme) data
AI relies on large-scale, complex data to learn, adapt and make predictions
