Bringing together a diverse community of over 750 experts, the 2025 HiPEAC conference served as a hub for discussions on computer architecture, programming models, compilers, and operating systems for embedded, cyber-physical, and general-purpose systems. As a leading event in the field, it provided a platform to address pressing topics such as cybersecurity, safety-critical dependencies, energy efficiency, and advancements in machine learning.
EXTRACT had a strong presence at the conference, through presentations given by Elli Kartsakli from the Barelona Supercomputing Center and through presentations by Eduard Quiñones, Alba Cañete-Garrucho (BSC) and Julien Girard (Observatoire de Paris) as part of the co-organized workshop “Advancing the compute continuum: intelligent solutions for extreme data and 5G-enabled ecosystems“.
20 January – CAFC: Computing and Computing Architectures for Future Communications
This workshop provided a platform to experts from both academia and industry to share their vision and overview relating to the advancements and challenges in the domain of computing and computing architectures for future communications. This workshop offered a forum for participants to discuss how we should shape the future research in the aforementioned areas.
Elli Kartsakli from the BSC gave a presentation on the “Compute Continuum: The need for combining data, computation and communication in the 5G ecosystem.

Women@HPC MAR WHPC chapter: Building the diversity continuum in cutting-edge technologies
This workshop brought together female experts in HPC, AI, and real-time systems to discuss their latest advancements in various cutting-edge technologies. It sought to foster an inclusive environment where the achievements of diverse communities are recognized, and where collaborative efforts can thrive to advance the frontiers of technology.
Elli Kartsakli from the BSC joined in the panel discussion “Building the diversity continnum in cutting-edge technologies”. She presented the work she is currently doing within the framework of the EXTRACT project and discussed her professional trajectory and vision with other panellists.

Advancing the compute continuum: intelligent solutions for extreme data and 5G-enabled ecosystems
This workshop, organized jointly by EXTRACT, VERGE, NEARDATA and CLOUDSKIN EU projects, presented novel approaches and solutions targeting key aspects of the compute continuum design, such as AI and data-driven service and resource orchestration, data management and security for extreme data, parallel and distributed architectures, and integration with 5G and beyond communication networks.
Eduardo Quiñones opened the workshop with a look into “Development, Deployment and Execution Chalenges Across the Compute Continuum”.
The first part of the workshop included presentations from the organizing projects who showed how their projects are pushing the frontiers of the compute continuum and applying their results to concrete applications.
Alba Cañete-Garrucho presented “The EXTRACT project: Abstracting a highly distributed and hetergeneous infrastructure” in the first part of the workshop

In the second half of the workshop, Elli Kartsakli moderated a lively discussion between panellists Julien Girard (EXTRACT, Observatoire de Paris), Thijs Metsch (VERGE, Intel), and Maria Serrano (CloudSkin, Nearby Computing) who represented the end-users of the technology being developed in the projects. The workshop provided an important look into the ongoing challenges and opportunities offered by the compute continuum.
